| You never knew Tim
Barlow, owner of Barlow Printing,
Cotati, California and the Printer of every issue of Cool Profit$
Magazine.
But he knew about you and of our industry. In fact, just a few days before his death he came up to Ellen and me… with that always- beaming Tim Barlow grin… all excited because he had recognized an aluminum radiator at the Sears Point Raceway as one made by a Cool Profit$ advertiser. His enthusiasm was wonderfully infectious and much appreciated by everyone he touched. In December 1992, when I decided to actually attempt to publish a magazine on my own, Tim was one of the printers that I “interviewed.” Right from the start he was very upbeat, encouraging and eager. He meticulously answered even the most rookie printing and production questions that I could throw at him. He took the time to explain how to layout a magazine so that I would get the right page numbers on the right pages. He hand-folded the samples for me. None of the other companies had offered, or seemed capable of offering, that degree of help. Much of the success of Cool Profit$ Magazine has been due not only to the production capabilities of Barlow Printing, but also the all-important management style radiating from Tim. Tim will be missed. Ellen and I offer our heartfelt condolences to Tim’s wife Diane, daughter Shawna, son Shane, brother Pat, his parents and family. John R. Hess |

From Tim's family: Tim was born January 2, 1946 in Leicester, England. At the age of 7, with his loving brother and parents, he immigrated to Toronto, Canada. From Toronto, the Barlow’s looked to America as their land of opportunity and moved once again, this time setting down roots in Novato, California. Tim’s father, Leslie, bought a small print shop in Novato where Tim apprenticed while attending Novato High School. In 1964, Tim scraped up enough money to buy his classic, white ’57 Thunderbird hard top convertible. This car was his pride and joy. A few years later in 1969, he met his sweetheart, Diane Dillman. On May 15, 1971 they became husband and wife and headed off to Indianapolis to experience the Indy 500 for their honeymoon. The business tool off and Tim, Pat, Josephine, and Les outgrew their Novato location, and moved to a larger site in Petaluma in 1979. Eventually they outgrew their Petaluma shop and relocated in 1993 to their current site in Cotati. In 1971, Tim and Diane had purchased the Paulsen dairy and chicken ranch on King Road and called it home. Tim was an excellent craftsman and began a life long of restoration of the ranch home that would become a thirty-year labor of love. Their new home was an ideal place to raise children so in 1974 Tim and Diane were blessed with their first child. A daughter they named Shawna Apryl Barlow. In the summer of 1979 the Barlow’s had a son named Timothy Shane Barlow. Tim was deeply involved with his children as they grew he supported their active life style in track, soccer, baseball/softball, tennis, cross-country. He was an avid A’s fan and looked forward each year to the annual “Lair of the Bear,” Cal Berkeley’s special interest week where he played golf, tennis and engaged in late night, noisy Gin Rummy competitions. He won several times the coveted “Gin Master’s Cap.” He never missed Hot August Nights in Reno and held the World Record by looking at a classic car for the longest period of time. Tim finally reached his ultimate dream of car racing when he took a hold of the steering wheel of his Lynx Formula-V. This past year Tim reached more of his dreams by helping Shane achieve his dream of racing. Although Tim no longer has physical presence on this earth, his memories and lessons will live on to create happiness in other people’s lives. |
